The appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu - initiations

Transcribed discourse by Srila B. A. Narayan Maharaj

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1987, for the inspiration of his american godbrothers Srila Narayan Maharaj visited the Philippines, where he spent a short time. In the name of Srila Sridhara Maharaja he gave ritvik initiations to a few local devotees. Today the leader of the mission is Murahari Prabhu, who took care of the community all along, and later he accepted Srila Bhakti Aloka Paramadvaiti Maharaja as his instructing guru.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has appeared on this auspicious day 500 and 2 years ago, if I am correct. He appeared in Navadvip Dham and although Krishna is known as trijuga avatar appearing in three yugas. Also in Kali Yuga, sometimes he appears as Mahaprabhu, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and then he is called mukta-avatar, hidden incarnation. Because he's coming in the role of a devotee, therefore, he prefers to not be known as an incarnation. Mahaprabhu did not like to hear that he is God. But of course, God cannot be hidden from his pure devotees. They discover him. They know Him. He cannot be hidden. So therefore, the devotees know that he is Krishna himself. Sri krishna chaitanya radha krishna nahe anya. Not only that he is Krishna himself but he is Radharani and Krishna. How is that possible?

That mystery is explained in the writings of the six Goswamis. That Sri Krishna is purna. He's complete, he is full. And not only that, but he is the reservoir of all pleasure. He's all beauty and the attractor of Madana. Therefore, he is called Madana Mohana. The attractor of Madana means Cupido. Do you have that in Philipino? ... do you say that? Cupido is holding the whole world in his grip. The whole world. Everybody is controlled by that Cupido, everybody. Every living entity from biggest thing to smallest tiny living entity through the different species like those roosters and then up to human beings and up to the demigods. Everybody is controlled by that. Everybody is under the influence of kama - lust. Everybody is gone through in that way by Madana.

But Krishna is so beautiful and so charming and so loving that he attracts, steals away the mind of Cupido, that he is called Madana Mohana. Mohana means "put into illusion". He takes away the mind, the intelligence of Cupido. Because if somebody falls in love in this world, people would understand that he loses his intelligence. He loses his mind, right? He became bewildered... so even his ego became bewildered by the beauty of Krishna. Krishna is so full, he’s so charming that Cupido loses all his mind. All his intelligence... he's bewildered, so Krishna is called Madana Mohana. Now one can claim, "Oh yes! He is the supreme, how wonderful!" But there is something more to hear in this very wonderful and mystical Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy. And that is, even the Supreme personality of Godhead himself, he falls under the control of one person and that person was Radhika, Srimati Radharani.

Srimati Radharani is so charming and so beautiful and so loving that Krishna is losing his mind. He's under the control of Radharani. Therefore, Radharani is called Madana Mohana Mohini. Meaning, one who bewilders the one who bewildered Cupido. Madana Mohana Mohini. So Krishna finds it very perplexing how Radharani affects my mind... how is this possible? I am the Lord of everything. I'm the enjoyer of all sacrifices and I'm the controller of all the planets. Everything moves under my direction. How is it possible that Radharani affects me so much? What is that she has? What is that devotion? What is that love and affection that she had? How is this possible? So to experience that, to taste that Krishna himself comes and appears as Mahaprabhu. He comes in the golden complexion of Radharani. Outside is the complexion that of Radharani and the feeling, the loving feeling towards Krishna is like that of Radharani. So, that wonderful avatar is Mahaprabhu.

Namo maha vadanyaya
krsna prema pradayate
krsnaya krsna chatanya
namne gaura tvise namaha

Mahaprabhu is the most magnanimous avatar. He comes to this world not only to taste that wonderful nectar, wonderful ambrosia that Radharani is experiencing towards Krishna but also to freely distribute it to the people in general.

When Krishna came, he demanded:

sarva dharma parityajya
mam ekam saranam braja

"Yes, by giving up all other engagements and all other duties and just surrender unto me". Then he says, "Don't worry, I shall protect you. Do not fear. If any trouble appear, I will take care of you. Don't worry." Krishna says, "Just surrender unto me." But Mahaprabhu is so magnanimous that he's not even asking that you surrender. He's freely distributing. Whether you wanted or not, he's giving. So the example is given.

So Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu they came. And that ocean of love was surrounded by a dike, breakwater, so this was built along the ocean of love of God. Why? Because Krishna says, sarva dharma praityajya - "Surrender to me." So this is like something to keep from the others. If there is no surrender you cannot come through this barrier. Just like a barrier. Do you follow?... barriers all around. Nityananda Prabhu and Mahaprabhu they broke this barrier. They broke the barrier and then the ocean of love of God flooded. Just like when there is monsoon and everything gets flooded. Something similar. It all flooded the whole world. And those who are devotees, they deep dived. They dived into it deeply. And those who are non devotees, they are flooded on the surface. But they are also with it. That is the mercy of Mahaprabhu, that he's coming.

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge
(Bg.4.8.)

Krishna comes from time to time to protect his devotees, to annihilate the demons, reestablish the lost principles of religion - for these reasons he come. So Mahaprabhu came to fulfill this, but this was secondary. His first mission was to experience that feeling of Radharani, that Mahabhava and to give it to the devotees. Then again, he protected the devotees from other influences. From influence of other thoughts, other schools who are not favorable to pure Bhakti. And then again, he annihilated not the bodies of the demons but rather he annihilated the pride, the lust and anger, etc. And all the demoniac nature. All demoniac thoughts he eliminated, he kill all those and not the body but mind. Those unfavorable thoughts to Krishna consciousness.

So for this reason, Mahaprabhu came, saparsada, with all of his associates. When Krishna descends in a sense an example can be given when an astronaut goes up to the sky, to the space. Then he has to go with some of the Earth's atmosphere. There is something on his head and on that thing there is an atmosphere of the Earth. Otherwise, you cannot exist. God of course, he could come in anyway he likes. But he comes with his atmosphere around and he comes with the holy dham from Goloka Vrindavan. And his associates, friends, mother, father etc., - everybody comes along. The whole entourage comes along. So Mahaprabhu came also along that way. Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita Acharya, Gadadhara Pandit, Srinivasa, Mukunda Datta and all the other came, Sarvabhauma... All. Everybody was there to perform his pastimes. To take part of his pastimes, to help him in that way.

So this is a very very auspicious day to commemorate the appearance day of Mahaprabhu. He appeared like the full Moon on the horizon of Gaudiya. When the full moon comes out, purnima - means it is complete. So Mahaprabhu came out. He's the complete Avatar, the complete incarnation. He came. And also another example is given... the living entities, they suffered very much due to the burning fire of material existence. Fire is burning. So similarly, in this material existence, the wrong desire is burning one. And wrong desire is caused by wrong actions and wrong actions cause sinful reactions. So, one is suffering due to all these. It is like being ablaze. When one is ablaze, then something cooling can help. So when the full moon comes up, it is cooling. It is very cooling - the rays are soothing. So when the full moon came up, then all the suffering jivas, the suffering living entities, they felt a great relief. "Oh! Something wonderful had happened!" And how did this happen exactly? What was the appearance of the stars, what the people did and what did the devotees presented to him on his birth and what they say? All shall be read about this afternoon.
